Lunettes Selection stores should function, delight, and inspire

Over the last ten years, Lunettes Selection has emphasized the curation of interior design just as much as the collection of the finest assortment of glasses and sunglasses. In concert with our clearly devised concept, Lunettes Selection stores should function, delight, and inspire.

TORSTRASSE / MITTE

Our second store, located at Torstrasse 172 in Berlin Mitte, opened in December 2009. To enhance the space, owner Uta Geyer went on the hunt for Mid-Century furniture, and struck it rich in Potsdam Babelsberg. Her search uncovered an optician’s shop that had been shuttered for 80 years. She was able to obtain the original fixtures: a vintage cabinet with 57 drawers, card cabinets, and vitrines made from prominent-grained dark wood.

The minimalistic fixtures, reminiscent of those from an old archive or apothecary, were custom hand-finished in East Germany for the Potsdam optician. Following a faithful eye for detail and love of tradition, each drawer bears a label typed with an old typewriter, telling which glasses or sunglasses are stored within.

For eyewear lovers, it’s like a cabinet of wonders – a true collection of rarities with a vast range covering the more than 100-year history of glasses. The old optical cabinets are complemented by two uncommon Mid-Century three-legged stools, covered in high-quality material from textile design house Kvadrat. The sophisticated fabric emerged from a collaboration between Kvadrat and the architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron.

It’s details like this that count in Lunettes Selection’s overall concept. And it’s not just Uta Geyer who brings her high aesthetic standards to the table in her Berlin boutiques. Lunettes customers also revel in fine design, and value the treasured objects she’s sought out for the stores, which hone the very aesthetic ‘language’ of Lunettes Selection. In minimalist shops, lighting plays a vital role: the customer must be able to see themselves and their new glasses or frames in the right light.

In the Torstrasse boutique hangs an unusual neon ceiling lamp with an industrial-style chrome frame; this 1930s original is in authentic condition.

On the counter sits a table lamp from the same era. Nearby, a vintage eye test chart from the 20s decorates the otherwise pristine wall. The focus here lies on visual presentation – of the one-of-a-kind eyewear finds, as well as of the vintage design objects that set an intriguing stage for them.

In addition, the comfortably cushioned benches in the panorama front window of the store invite one to relax and linger, while offering an observation point on the urban scenes of Berlin Mitte. Lunettes Selection functions almost more like a gallery than a business, and has become a hotspot for style seekers on the well-known Torstrasse.

This bustling street boasts a mix of neo-renaissance “Gründerzeit” buildings and numerous East German apartment blocks; the resulting blend of architectural flourishes and radical grey ugliness exemplifies Berlin Mitte’s intrinsic kind of charm. Though the neighborhood may lack romantic glamour, it has become the place to be, to see and be seen. Independent designers, galleries, and quirky shops can all be found here, nestled against bars, cafés, and restaurants.

Lunettes, with its carefully curated interior, fits firmly into the vibrant scene around Rosenthaler Platz, and entices customers from Berlin Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg, as well as from all over the globe. In this location, it’s not just about looking good, it’s also about seeing well. Vision tests are available to help make the most of one’s coveted glasses, retro frames, or desired progressive lenses. For every model, we’ll find the optimal lens.

Lunettes Selection places its focus on individual eye exams that use traditional optical tools; an elaborate craft that deserves to be brought back. Vision is measured using a traditional method – known as subjective refraction – that is rarely practiced today. Together with the eye test, our master opticians will provide an in-depth consultation to gauge the correct prescription and ideal lenses to fit the chosen frame. This personal service is available from our opticians during opening hours. Important: contact lenses should not be worn on the day of the refraction. As well as refraction, this Lunettes location also offers repair services in its workshop. Additionally, glasses purchased online can also be fitted with suitable lenses in the Torstrasse workshop.

BLEIBTREUSTRASSE / CHARLOTTENBURG

Our third location for unique, high-quality glasses can be found on Bleibtreustrasse, not far from Kurfürstendamm, which independent specialist shops have made their home for more than one hundred years.
The interior of this boutique was designed by Oskar Kohnen, whose aim was to combine a modern, clean look with references from the previous century.

Bleibtreustrasse-Charlottenburg-Schrank

Upon entering the minimal white cube-style showroom with its large panorama window facing Bleibtreustrasse, the eye falls immediately on a pastel green cabinet with numerous drawers. It towers from the very top of the ceiling, running all the way down to the lower level, which is reachable by a thin spiral staircase.

In the remaining space, the architect draws on minimalism, allowing just a few carefully chosen pieces of furniture from recent design history: a 1980s Hank Kwint side table, a wheeled cart designed by Jacques Adnet, two “Butterfly” chairs from Pierre Paulin, as well as a Bauhaus-era ceiling lamp. Beneath them all gleams a carefully restored original marble floor from the 1970s. Finally, an oversized potted plant adds organic forms to the minimalist setting. The only contemporary touch to be seen is a sculptural lamp made by Berlin product designer Sebastian Summa, which was created exclusively for the location.

Although each is outfitted differently and furnished with unique elements, all the Lunettes Selection boutiques have commonalities in their interiors. Two locations have linoleum floors – a material that, like the vintage furniture on display, is both alluring and eco-friendly. It’s versatile, sustainable, and has a distinct connection with the contents of the stores: the colorful look of linoleum is reminiscent of the friendly tones of classic acetate – the favorite material that comprises the glasses in our own eyewear line, Lunettes Kollektion.

Thanks to these distinctly refined interiors, the design concepts of our three boutiques have regularly received attention from the press, just as the Lunettes Selection stores and our Lunettes Kollektion eyewear range have – from the Louis Vuitton Guide and Wallpaper, to trend publications for jet set urbanists like Monocle magazine. In 2019, Oskar Kohnen’s interior for Lunettes Selection Charlottenburg was nominated by design magazine DEZEEN for their renowned award.

In each Lunettes location, our knowledgeable staff is on hand to help customers find the ideal pair of glasses that best suits each individual face.

MARIENBURGER STRASSE / PRENZLAUER-BERG

The poured concrete floor of this historic “Gründerzeit” building on Marienburger Strasse in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg is polished to a high shine.
The many-drawer card catalog-like cabinets are painted a cool green-gray, calling forth visions of an old library.

Lunettes in der Marienburger Brillen

Such shades lend the boutique the atmosphere of a French film noir. The impression is heightened by the particular lighting effect: on the counter and in the display window sit two lamps designed by Louis Christian Kalff for Philipps — originals from the 1950s, manufactured in the Netherlands.

Lunettes in der Marienburger Brillen

Cool-toned, the combination of aluminum, brass, and dark green enameled steel that makes up the lamps perfectly complements the furniture’s kindred paint color, which comes from Farrow&Ball. Their beams refract through the gold-topped bulbs and wide metal shades, throwing clear shadows. The brass tones of the vintage lights are repeated in the plexiglass vitrine, which serves not only as a transparent stage for several glasses models, but also connects the interior to the street outside.

Lunettes Selection’s singular style know-how for glasses and sunglasses attracts not just design-obsessed Berliners, but also tourists with good taste and a predilection for eyewear and exceptional opticians.

The fact that these especially precious eyewear designs can be found near Kollwitzplatz and Berlin’s Schoenhauser Allee, in a calm ambience that comfortably allows for making the perfect choice, has placed us in the pages of the best international shopping guides (for example Louis Vuitton City Guide Berlin, among others).

In the center of family-friendly Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, alongside vintage glasses and exceptional designer eyewear, it is fitting that particularly rare vintage children’s glasses are also available here. Additionally, all of the glasses and sunglasses offered on Lunettes’ online shop can be seen in this location. Over the last 10 years, Lunettes Selection has become known not only as a beloved Berlin optician, but also as an online eyewear source for the most exclusive vintage and designer glasses, making a name for ourselves far and wide beyond the city’s borders.
